Plans for Downstairs
Now onto the exciting stuff - plans for remodeling! Starting here with the downstairs as that's our biggest priority. A post on upstairs will follow later. Pretty much as soon as we viewed the house, we knew what we wanted to change in terms of layout. Some other changes took living in the house for a couple of weeks to confirm it was what we wanted. Though one thing is for certain, we definitely need the artex ceilings plastered over!
The existing space is a spacious open plan living/dining room, with a kitchen essentially in a box in one corner.
1) Kitchen-Diner
The most important change is installing a nice new kitchen to replace the existing 80s units! To make a kitchen/diner space, we will be putting up a wall to partition the dining area from the living room, and knocking down the existing kitchen walls. A new doorway will be directly into the kitchen. With a big window in the kitchen and big sliding doors in the dining area (both looking onto a south facing garden), this new space should hopefully be really light and airy.
For now we are contacting builders to get quotes for the work, which is proving slow progress so far... Frustrating but hopefully we can still get it done before the end of the Summer.
2) Living Room and New Corridor
To avoid wasted space in having a walk-through living area to the kitchen/diner, and to create a more cosy living space, we will be putting up a wall to create a corridor and a separate living room.
As part of this work, we'll take down the existing wall beside the stairs, and replace with a bannister so the new corridor is a bit more open.
3) Downstairs Cloakroom
The downstairs cloakroom is in desperate need of rennovation after the plumbers left it in a complete mess (e.g. concrete flushed down the toilet, some left behind...). It's pretty much been out of action since then! The question is whether to keep the cloakroom location where it is, or move it to under the stairs. Whichever space is not used for the cloakroom will be a kind of mini utility room, with a washing machine and storage. Probably we will keep it where it is for ease, but you never know!
I really hope there will be an update on all this soon - if the builders ever get back to us!
